This year, 2021, is a bit special for Cannes, since the 74th International Film Festival takes place during the peak summer season from July 6 to 17. Some emblematic works by Steph Cop will be on display at Hatchikian Gallery in the spaces of the iconic Croisette palace. The bronze Black Raw<\/em> 220cm in size, its reflections evoke the lines of the tree and its life trajectory. It has found its place in the garden of lemon trees and olive trees, a true haven of peace where it is pleasant to sit down for a drink, a musical dinner or even a breakfast in a Proven\u00e7al village atmosphere. Made in 2019, the bronze Black Raw<\/em> is the reproduction of a sculpture in ash named Ashraw that is part of the figures \u00a0<\/span>which tell the soul of the fallen trees whose material the artist makes from them. These formal figures are an introspective exploration of the relationship between Man and the tree, an essential question for Steph Cop whose work stems from an immersion in the ecosystem of the tree in the Morvan forest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The Martinez, a jewel in the Unbound x Hyatt collection, recently renovated by the architectural firm of Pierre-Yves Rochon in a yachting style that brings back the softness of the Riviera lifestyle, offers a privileged setting for contemplating the works of Steph Cop. As you wander through the hotel\u2019s spaces bathed in a gentle light, after meeting Black Raw<\/em>, You will be able to discover the sculpture Robur<\/em> whose abrupt and fine silhouette symbolizes the strength of the tree and its life\u2019s flaws, Columnae<\/em> whose deliberately interrupted shape testifies to the unfinished fate of the tree, Copelini<\/em>, a refined figure bearing the vertical tension of the tree and the Cube<\/em>, bronze<\/em> which represents the soul and the existential center of gravity of the tree in Steph Cop\u2019s ARO movement. Through these five major works of the artist, one experiences the creative sequence of the ARO movement, central to the work, a sequence marked by a dynamic of elevation of the line, of tension, of relief, of asymmetry, towards the possible advent of a new gravity that will consecrate the completion and, ultimately, the return to the Cube from which the series began. ARO is a research dedicated to the unfolding of the form. This purified verticality is, for the artist, the axis of the vital momentum: to remain standing. \u00abI observe the flows of the living being, the elevation towards the sky from the roots of those who hold us, but also the healing rain that flows along the branches until it infiltrates the earth to nourish it. Verticality is the secret of the history of the tree. My first gesture is to establish a verticality: to raise the fallen tree. The standing tree addresses me with a call to humility. I first tame the precious and unique material by searching for the volumes, which I deconstruct with caution and difficulty. I subtract the perpendiculars to trace the horizontal and oblique lines. Each cut is a spectrum of the passing time.\u00bb.<\/span><\/p>

The ARO cycle in Steph Cop\u2019s work features emblematic figures that personify the carved tree. Among these various silhouettes, Robur holds a symbolic place. Robur is a steadfast guardian figure: a pillar. He represents the strength of nature. His name Robur comes from the botanical Latin name of the pedunculate oak, the etymology meaning sturdy oak. It also evokes the character of Robur the Conqueror in the narratives of Jules Verne. Steph Cop\u2019s work features various Roburs of all sizes; some are the artist\u2019s guardians of passage points, others have found their place with collectors. The guests of the Palme d\u2019Or at the Martinez Cannes hotel will therefore be able to admire the Robur 173 in oak at the entrance to the gastronomic restaurant. Among the Roburs that the artist has sculpted, there is one that holds a special place: the Robur of Rodez. Indeed, Steph Cop was approached for an in-situ project in the city that houses the Soulages Museum, on the occasion of the Soulages Centenary celebrating the centennial of the master of the Outremer. The majestic sequoia in the center of the courtyard of the Joseph Fabre College in Rodez, which saw generations of children grow up and play, witness to all the secrets that have unfolded on the lands of the Rhone Valley, was showing signs of exhaustion that doomed it to fall to the ground. Its great age makes it the guarantor of the memory of the places, an old convent from the 16th century that will be transformed in the 19th century into a building hosting the Grand Seminary. Legend has it that in 1837, Monsignor Flaget, bishop in Kentucky, arrived in Rodez, perhaps bringing some seeds from the New World that would cross the decades to grow into a tree that became familiar and emblematic for all the inhabitants of the city. In 2019, Steph Cop therefore sculpted the Sequoia at Coll\u00e8ge Fabre, as a way of never closing the page of a book that writes a narrative both embodied and imaginary: that of time, of life, of being-in-the-world. During 22 days of sculpting, Steph Cop returned to the tree every morning as if it were a new appointment. The ritual of a long observation, of touching, before taking the tool. The color of the tree\u2019s flesh, a palette of deep browns and roses, revealed its nuances at every incision. The artist had in mind that the Indians revered the giant Sequoia to the point of considering it the axis of the world around which creation had been organized. The tree stands out for its strength, and in particular its ability to withstand fires and to rise from its ashes like a phoenix. 22 days of sculpting to raise the exhausted tree through the incarnation of Robur. This is how art was able to prolong the beautiful story of the hundred-year-old sequoia, through the majesty of Robur 4400, a monumental sculpture exhibited in Rodez during the Si\u00e8cle Soulages year. A book was published, thanks to the Hatchikian Gallery\u2019s sponsorship, a sculpture journal kept by the artist during this project. The book was kindly offered by the gallery to the enthusiasts of Steph Cop\u2019s work. Robur, since then, has regained that conquering strength that will keep him on his way, and who knows where you will see him reappear, one day\u2026 A beautiful story that will allow the Martinez\u2019s guests to appreciate the entire legend of the figure Robur through the example installed at the Palme d\u2019Or.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Robur and Le Cube are exhibited in the halls of the Palme d\u2019Or, a gastronomic restaurant with two Michelin stars where Chef Sinicropi imagines plates in the style of a pictorial composition, like a painter of flavors. The culinary creations are presented as ephemeral works to be enjoyed on collections of plates created especially in duo with his wife the ceramic artist Catherine Sinicropi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Both instinctive and cerebral, his original cuisine, inspired by the product\u2019s memorable history, offers a multisensory experience: the flavors and taste notes are associated as an olfactory construction, unfolding like a musical score; the chromatic arrangements and the texture relief create unique tasting nuances.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Steph Cop and Christian Sinicropi have woven links between their two worlds. \u00abI have already had the opportunity to work with Steph Cop, who created plates for the Palme d\u2019Or. His unique universe inspires me. My approach to cooking resonates with his sensitivity to the plant cycle, his way of sculpting trees to prolong their soul and destiny. My cuisine tells the entire story of the product in its ecosystem. Our creations have common sources,\u00bb explains the chef, who designed, for the reopening of the Palme d\u2019Or after months of restaurant closures, a plant-based proposal that transcribes the wooded universe of Steph Cop in flavors. The artistic approach of Steph Cop and the gastronomic one of Christian Sinicropi meet with a certain resonance in the environmental issues that now permeate our lifestyles. The vegetarian menu offered at La Palme d\u2019Or is a story between an artist, Steph Cop, a ceramist, Catherine Sinicropi, and original cuisine.<\/span><\/p>

The first movement is a creation around artichoke: \u00abThe purple-blue color of its flower inspired me to create the following notes: Acrid, sweet, oak wood, violet,\u00bb indicates the chef. The woody note of a cherry tree dear to Steph Cop structures the flavor architecture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The second movement is a gourmand, concentrated composition focused on the perception of a seasonal vegetable, the haricot, with a note of mossy foam. These are elements of the ecosystem of the tree that can be encountered throughout the pages of Steph Cop\u2019s book and the photographer Balint P\u00f5rneczi\u2019s work, which traces the wanderings in the forest, an idyllic source of inspiration, the workshop in Morvan, the creative gestural approach, and the search for the soul of the carved tree, embodied in the 9 ARO shapes. A work in which the photographs, writings, and traces of a history inscribed in the material give a glimpse of the inseparable connection between the artist, their place, and the work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The third movement is a work around the zucchini in yellow and green nuances, which the chef describes as \u00aban azure-colored taste song with notes of smoky wood and pollen musk.\u00bb.<\/span><\/p>

The fourth movement honors the honey of Gourdon, a scent of thyme and an olive oil note, as a sensation of freshness in the shadow of the Riviera. Chef Sinicropi works for many months on preparing this exceptional dinner, creating ceramic plates inspired by the filmography and the universe of the Jury President. Each dish of the menu is thus served in a unique work of art. The Martinez welcomes the greatest stars during this fortnight of excitement, and its history is marked by moments of anthology. A majestic suite of exceptional proportions has just been inaugurated on the hotel\u2019s top floor, with an interior designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon, the architect who oversaw the various renovations of the Martinez. One of the most beautiful suites in Europe, with a breathtaking panorama of the Croisette from the terrace.
