An eclectic creator, brilliant and erudite, Pierre Legrain (1889\u20131929) first made his mark with his pen (sharpened at the Germain Pilon school from 1901 to 1907, where he met Robert Delaunay, among others), and with his sense of graphic design, talents that earned him the opportunity to work on drawings in collaboration with Paul Iribe, founder of the satirical newspaper T\u00e9moin. Pierre Legrain subsequently developed a skill that opened him up to binding or framing, and then to design, architecture, and decoration with the conception of objects and art furniture, during a period marked by the codes of Art Deco.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote><\/blockquote><\/blockquote><\/blockquote>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Il s\u2019initie \u00e0 la reliure en autodidacte quand Jacques Doucet, couturier et grand collectionneur d\u2019art, prend le jeune artiste sous son aile comme salari\u00e9 et lui\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>confie la t\u00e2che de relier sa collection de livres. Pierre Legrain installe alors son atelier dans les appartements du m\u00e9c\u00e8ne. De 1917 \u00e0 1919, il impose un style singulier et original, usant de mat\u00e9riaux nobles, d\u00e9veloppant des lignes et des graphismes qui rompent avec la tradition. Son talent est bient\u00f4t distingu\u00e9 ; sa reconnaissance en la mati\u00e8re lui vaut de travailler pour de grands collectionneurs et de recevoir le prix Blumenthal en 1925.<\/span><\/p>

Pierre Legrain s\u2019illustre aussi par sa mani\u00e8re de renouveler l\u2019encadrement de toiles, dans un style qui reprend sa d\u00e9marche de reliure. En 1924, Jacques Doucet, sur le conseil d\u2019Andr\u00e9 Breton, fait l\u2019acquisition des Demoiselles d\u2019Avignon de Picasso (1907) pour la somme de 25 000 Francs et charge Pierre Legrain d\u2019encadrer l\u2019\u0153uvre, qui figure aujourd\u2019hui dans les collections du MOMA \u00e0 New York. En effet, apr\u00e8s la mort de Jacques Doucet en 1929, sa veuve c\u00e8de le tableau \u00e0 Jacques Seligmann, peu avant la fin de l\u2019exposition universelle de 1937 o\u00f9 il est pr\u00e9sent\u00e9, pour 150 000 Francs. Jacques Seligmann exporte le tableau dans sa galerie Seligmann & Co \u00e0 New York et c\u2019est Alfred Barr, premier directeur du MOMA qui l\u2019acquiert alors en 1939 au profit du mus\u00e9e, pour une somme de 200000. Francs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Jacques Doucet souhaite harmoniser la d\u00e9coration de son appartement avec ses collections d\u2019art, et c\u2019est ainsi que la collaboration avec Pierre Legrain s\u2019oriente vers la cr\u00e9ation d\u2019un mobilier d\u2019exception qui m\u00eale des influences du cubisme et d\u2019un art africain particuli\u00e8rement pris\u00e9 du couturier. L\u2019appartement de Jacques Doucet se con\u00e7oit comme une v\u00e9ritable mise en sc\u00e8ne, un d\u00e9cor qui fait lui-m\u00eame figure d\u2019\u0153uvre d\u2019art. Dans cette p\u00e9riode du d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 20, Pierre Legrain rencontre Jeanne Tachard, amie de Jacques Doucet, dont la collection d\u2019art africain inspire le cr\u00e9ateur. Elle va, \u00e0 la suite de Jacques Doucet faire appel \u00e0 Pierre Legrain pour l\u2019am\u00e9nagement total de sa villa \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re, \u00e9galement, d\u2019une \u0153uvre d\u2019art totale, espaces, mobiliers, objets, \u00e9clairages et jardin qui deviendra embl\u00e9matique.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/blockquote><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/blockquote><\/div><\/div><\/blockquote>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

D\u2019autres personnalit\u00e9s confieront \u00e9galement \u00e0 Pierre Legrain l\u2019architecture et le design de leurs int\u00e9rieurs (Marie Bonaparte, Maurice Martin du Gard, Pierre Meyer, Marie Laure de Noailles\u2026).<\/span><\/p>

Alors que Pierre Legrain commen\u00e7ait \u00e0 \u00eatre pris\u00e9 sur le march\u00e9 am\u00e9ricain notamment par l\u2019interm\u00e9diaire du marchand d\u2019art franco am\u00e9ricain Jacques Seligmann, il meurt d\u2019une crise cardiaque \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de 40 ans, la m\u00eame ann\u00e9e que la disparition de Jacques Doucet. Une carri\u00e8re courte qui laisse n\u00e9anmoins une empreinte singuli\u00e8re.<\/span><\/p>

Les meubles cr\u00e9\u00e9s par Pierre Legrain associe des mat\u00e9riaux exotiques (Bois de palmier ou d\u2019\u00e9b\u00e8ne) et des mati\u00e8res plus inattendues (cuir, parchemin, toile cir\u00e9e, nacre, m\u00e9tal, glace). Un jeu formel avec diff\u00e9rentes mati\u00e8res d\u00e9j\u00e0 exp\u00e9riment\u00e9 dans les reliures. Les lignes sont \u00e0 la fois simples et graphiques, et pourtant en harmonie avec des touches plus surprenantes ou m\u00eame des ruptures audacieuses. Le fonctionnalisme n\u2019est pas l\u2019objet de ses conceptions, qui sont avant tous des \u0153uvres d\u2019art.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Pr\u00e8s d\u2019un si\u00e8cle plus tard, Ara Ohanessian, fondateur d\u2019Objets d\u2019Initi\u00e9s, r\u00e9alise un r\u00eave : cr\u00e9er une nouvelle \u00e9dition des meubles Pierre Legrain. Ara Ohannessian a d\u00e9couvert l\u2019\u0153uvre de Pierre Legrain en 1972 lors de la vente \u00e0 Drouot de la collection Jacques Doucet. Un \u00e9merveillement et le moteur d\u2019une vie. L\u2019acquisition de deux \u0153uvres originales du cr\u00e9ateur, un banc africain et une curule, va \u00eatre le point de d\u00e9part d\u2019une longue aventure. Ara Ohannessian r\u00e9alise de longues recherches pour r\u00e9pertorier l\u2019int\u00e9gralit\u00e9 des \u0153uvres de Pierre Legrain dispers\u00e9es dans des collections priv\u00e9es et des institutions du monde entier (on peut admirer la chaise africaine \u00e0 Paris au Mus\u00e9e des Arts D\u00e9coratifs ou des objets comme un porte cigarettes au MET NewYork ; plusieurs pi\u00e8ces ont fait partie de la collection Yves Saint Laurent et Pierre Berg\u00e9…). Ara Ohanessian \u00e9tudie le travail de fabrication des pi\u00e8ces originales avec une infinie pr\u00e9cision pour pouvoir convaincre les ayant-droits, qu\u2019il rencontre en 2015, de la fid\u00e9lit\u00e9 de son projet \u00e0 l\u2019esprit de Pierre Legrain. 13 pi\u00e8ces vont ainsi pouvoir faire l\u2019objet d\u2019une nouvelle \u00e9dition en 8 exemplaires et 3 \u00e9preuves d\u2019artiste : trois curules, une banquette, une table de salle \u00e0 manger, un banc africain, une table basse, un \u00e9cran de chemin\u00e9e, une m\u00e9ridienne, un fauteuil cubiste, un gu\u00e9ridon, un valet de nuit et une chaise africaine. Pour une fabrication qui honore pleinement le talent du cr\u00e9ateur en reproduisant fid\u00e8lement ses \u0153uvres, Ara Ohanessian a fait appel \u00e0 des artisans d\u2019excellence et artisans d\u2019art passionn\u00e9s, sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9s dans des corps de m\u00e9tiers aux savoirs-faire m\u00e9ticuleux, travaillant des mat\u00e9riaux nobles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
