Erro

(1932)

“Collage is the most exciting part of my job, the freest; it's almost automatic writing. This is where I find formal solutions to saturate the space, my “all-over” side, as they say for American abstract artists. Collage is both the original and the model. "

Born Gudmundur Gudmondsson on July 19, 1932, Erro is a postmodern Icelandic artist. From 1949 to 1954, Erro studied art in Reykjavik, then in Oslo and Florence. He then entered the Ravenna School of Mosaic in 1955, before moving to Paris in 1958, where he met artists, writers and critics of the surrealist movement such as André Breton, Brauner, Masson, Max Ernst, Man Ray , Miro or even Duchamp.

In 1964, in New York, he definitively gave up inventing personal forms and embarked on his famous “collage-paintings”. Throughout his life, Erro travels to the four corners of the world and collects images (news photos, advertisements, comics, posters, political documents…) which are his source of inspiration. Thus, he chooses them, assembles them and accumulates them on canvases.

From each of his journeys are born reservoirs of funny, ironic or even militant images from which it often results in series, such as Chinese, political or erotic cycles, among others. This pioneer of the narrative figuration movement reveals and denounces, through his works, the absurdities - even the aberrations - of contemporary society. Thus, this artist who is neither conventional nor traditional brings together figures from cartoons and historical despots in a predominant universe that is comics. Each of his works is a cultural sample inspired by all the countries that Erro traveled throughout his career.
