Pavel RTUE
Pavel Rtue was born in 1989 in Sevastopol, Ukraine. He established himself as an artist in the early 2000s through the practice of graffiti and classical lettering. In 2011, he obtained his degree in graphic design at the Crimean Art College.
Pavel then continued to explore his own artistic language, taking painting classes and studying avant-garde and postmodernism. Gradually, he moved away from the traditional codes of graffiti, exploring new approaches and experimenting with different forms and materials.
Painting constitutes the main medium of his artistic practice. However, Rtue does not limit himself to canvas; he regularly works on surfaces and formats of different scales. His method is constantly nourished by his observations, stylistic experiments, and everyday objects that he collects and then reinterprets within his compositions.
The artist describes his work himself as a form of contemporary abstraction and experimental muralism.
Pavel currently lives and works in Paris.
His constant exploration of his surroundings and his walks through the urban landscape have profoundly shaped his artistic practice. Initially manifested by the recurrent use of his own name, this approach is now expressed through the reinterpretation of images found by chance, of spots of color and lines, which become points of departure for creating new meanings in his work.
His interest in the objects around him has its origins, among other things, in his childhood. Random finds, whose function or meaning were not always understandable to a child, were then attributed stories and almost magical properties. Having lived most of his life by the sea, he regularly found strange objects thrown onto the shore by the waves: fragments of automobile mechanisms, bulbs with unusual shapes, or pieces of granite tiles. In his hands, these debris acquired a new life.
This constant search is natural for him. Each work can be considered the metaphorical image of a child’s pocket filled with artifacts. The found objects and the various elements he collects continue to acquire a particular meaning in his practice. Some naturally find their place in the work, while others are abandoned at the very earliest stages of the creative process.
Painting remains the central medium of his artistic practice. His works are characterized by vivid colors and bold associations between abstraction and figuration. One of the particularities of his work lies in the creation of deliberately ambiguous images, difficult to interpret, composed of a multitude of elements. This way of composing is in some respects similar to collage, a practice with which he maintains a strong affinity.
By deliberately departing from the conventions established through academic drawing, Pavel creates compositions that are deliberately «incorrect». He thus seeks to erase as much of his own ego from the creative process as possible, in order to allow the work to develop in a spontaneous and autonomous manner.
His artistic research finally focuses on the combination of different elements with visual narration, and on how their meeting can give rise to new pictorial realities.
