JUMPINCOLORS, David Bruce and Simon Poter
Duo show presented by Hatchikian Gallery & Quai 36
JUMPINCOLORS is the new event offered by Hatchikian Gallery and Quai 36, who are continuing their partnership for a program of exhibitions dedicated to artists working both in urban space and in their studios. This spring will be filled with vibrant color with the duo show by David Bruce and Simon Poter, curated by Audrey Hatchikian and Julie Frydman. This exhibition is already scheduled for April, following the Projections group show, which currently brings together Chazme, Nelio and Zabala with pictorial proposals that question the perspectives and horizons of the world we inhabit.
The cross-eyed gaze of an art gallery and a production house for urban art offer an original opportunity to appreciate the interferences between mural practice and pictorial research in the work of two artists who play with fragments of color and stylized forms. Their works are vibrant with the energy of urban culture that emerges from polychrome graphic lines and are a true antidote to the monotony of our everyday environments. Inspired by the codes and the imagination of urban playgrounds and their tribal affiliations, David Bruce and Simon Poter deploy an acidically playful visual language resolutely sunny and carefree, carrying a playful utopia that conjures the tragic existential.
David Bruce discovered the practice of graffiti in the Parisian suburbs, on the street basketball courts. Driven by the conquering thirst for space on the wall, he pursued an exalted work that celebrates joy through naive pop figures dominated by bright yellows. Bananas, logos and pictograms draw a universe that dispels the heaviness of life to bring us back to the playful dimension of existence. David Bruce regularly participates in urban festivals, exhibits internationally and collaborates with an iconic American streetwear brand associated with basketball: Nike, which has recognized his work on social media and has used his artistic identity to create three T-shirts now worn worldwide. Today based in Liège, he works in his studio on canvas and ceramics with compositions that extend the approach of a frank simplicity of bright colors. David Bruce was among the artists presented by Quai 36 at the last edition of the Urban Week Paris La Défense festival.
Simon Poter began his career in graffiti before pursuing a more traditional training at the Beaux-Arts in Lyon. His compositions play with polychromatic abstraction, with a dynamic of mosaic-like forms whose movement is triggered by the tension of the line and the contrast of the color planes. His graphic style, a geometry where color serves as a unit of measurement, opens the door to collaborations with emblematic brands in urban culture. Regularly invited to mural projects, in the context of festivals or institutional commissions, he develops in the studio a work that transcribes this intense multicoloured intensity of abstract motifs on a canvas scale. Simon Poter collaborated with Quai 36 as part of the architectural project Entract’ for the construction of the Artchipel residence in Garenne-Colombes, unveiling a monumental fresco conceived as a vibrant jazz rhythm in which the colours would have replaced the notes.
The show duo JUMPINCOLORS It will offer a common artistic playing field for these two artists, for unprecedented productions that will confront their graphic messages in a friendly chromatic duel where lines confront curves: the part promises to be a whirlwind of color that will undoubtedly wake us up from our hibernation and bring us back to the brilliance of a joyful visual vivacity.
