Toxic, the irreverence of color

To see what Toxic looked like at the age of 18, the best way is to wander through the collections of the Whitney Museum in New York. Among Basquiat’s works, the canvas titled Hollywood Africans represents, in this unique visual language, a trio of artists formed by Basquiat himself, Rammellzee and Toxic, three «gangsters» stereotyped in the Hollywood myth, three Afro-American New Yorkers seeking to make their name in an even more inaccessible and ungrateful universe for talent from the margins, the suburbs and minorities. A series of words refers to the lackluster role reserved for blacks in the films of the golden age of cinema. Slashy, striped words that say a lot about the segregation that fractures society at the time.

Yann L’Outsider: duality as a creative tension.

Yann Le Berre aka L’outsider has long practiced urban art and it is now in Brittany that he has set up his studio, in former agricultural buildings transformed into a space for creation and artistic experimentation, offering the possibility of hanging the works, especially the large formats, to appreciate the scenography.
From urban art to the workshop
In his artistic research, Yann L’outsider plays with the dualities that constitute his path. His orientation towards working in the studio, about ten years ago, inevitably transformed the conditions of creation, placing the artist in a different temporal context, turning him towards more standardized mediums, yet Yann L’outsider continues to seek to recreate the state of stillness, urgency, imbalance, or even discomfort that may have stimulated the creative momentum in urban environments.

Bernar Venet, a minimal gesture yet monumental

Bernar Venet currently lives in Muy (Var) in the conceptual art foundation he created in 2014, around a 16th-century windmill purchased in 1989, the epicenter of a sculpture park and an art gallery. A return to Provençal roots for the son of a schoolteacher from Château-Arnoux, who arrived in Nice in the 1960s, for an artistic journey that would lead him a few years later to settle in New York. In 1966, a first stay at Arman’s invitation was the prelude to more than half a century of life beyond the Atlantic.

Maryi, an aesthetic poetry of nuance

Hatchikian Gallery presents the artist Maryi and is pleased to share the emotion generated by the discovery of her work, an abstract and delicate work from which emanates great poetic sensuality. A beautiful encounter with an artist who is also a beautiful person, who pursues aesthetic research by opening spaces of silence where softness blends with the creative tension. A work that explores our condition as speaking beings, present in the world through our thinking bodies. How do we find our place, how do we fit into the common space-time by welcoming the nuances of existence?

Basquiat, from the icon of hip-hop culture and post-graffiti to the major figure of the art market.

Post-graffiti expressionism in the New York underground of the 80s – In a period when conceptual and minimalist art constituted the dominant currents of contemporary American aesthetics, Basquiat’s universe emerged as a break from the norm, as neo-expressionist painting. Basquiat began his career very young, creating conceptual graffiti with his friend Al Diaz under the pseudonym SAMO. In the 80s New York, the post-graffiti movement was marked by a shift from the street and urban surfaces to the studio and canvas, opening the way for young artists from the counterculture to enter the art market.

Remed, a graphic mythology

Remed employs a very unique visual language through a work that is resolutely sunny and warm: a way of celebrating life and love, and of transcribing into art what transcends us and connects us. A universal artistic language that brings together aesthetic emotion, the laws of science, mathematics, and the symbolic dimension, for a cosmogony in which forms, lines, and colors weave these myths and parables that are the founding myths of civilizations that narrate the specificities of the human condition.

Youssef Boubekeur: The triumph of the animal, an acceptance of the other

Youssef Boubekeur seeks to reveal, with the precision of his monochrome brushstroke of universal blue, the interior shades of light and shadow, defying the divisions between man and animal to trace behavioral analogies and remind us that the path from savagery to civilization is not always linear. His work questions the human condition in the light of animal otherness. Domesticating the animal within us, reestablishing a sense of belonging, an imperative addressed to humanity in an age of hypermodernity that promotes the reign of the instinctual and encourages predation.

Yves Klein, the painter of the intangible

The ineffable, the intangible, the inscrutable: during his dazzling life, Yves Klein sought to materialize them in the language of pigments.
Klein Blue or International Klein Blue, emblematic of the work
Blue, a revelation: this saturated blue overseas, IKB, combined with a fixing agent that allows it not to lose its intensity, constitutes the paradigm of a flamboyant work carried by the idea of universal permeation through color. A «blue beyond the pale»: it radiates vibrations of the mind. For Yves Klein, it is the most abstract color: «Blue has no dimension; it is beyond dimensions. All colors bring associations of concrete ideas, while blue evokes at most the sea and the sky, which is the most abstract thing in tangible and visible nature.» IKB blue was developed with a chemist from the pharmaceutical industry who helped the artist find an adjuvant, a synthetic resin called Rhodopas, whose property is to shrink when dried to reveal and reveal the pure pigment.

The Fragments of Steph.Cop: a polysemy of the Cube.

Steph Cop inscribes his artistic research in immersion in the ecosystem of the Morvan where he has installed his studio. The sculpture is part of a vital cycle in which the artist explores its extent. By carving the fallen trees, he prolongs their destiny in figures that perpetuate the memory of history. In the unfolding of his work, the Fragments are a series of carved sculptures that hold a special place. Interlude? Transition between two movements? A sequence of sculpture as an artistic moment in suspense that marks the end of the ARO cycle embodied in movement IX and the momentum towards a new creative dynamic, a momentum towards the monumental.
